The ViPrimePLUS Fowlpox Virus qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Fowlpox Virus genome in blood, lesion and oral swabs, scab and tissue.
Fowlpox virus is a double-stranded DNA virus that infects chickens, turkeys and many other birds. The infection is usually slow-spreading, mainly transmitted via contact with abrasions of the skin, skin lesions, scabs shed in the aerosol and mosquito bites. It is characterized with the presence of cutaneous lesions and scabs on the skin and diphtheritic lesions in the upper part of the digestive and respiratory tracts. The cutaneous form is less severe and most birds are most likely to recover. However, the diphtheritic form has a higher chance of developing respiratory distress and suffocation. Therefore, the mortality rate is higher than the cutaneous form, nearing 50% especially in young birds. A slight drop in egg production and growth rate can be observed due to fowlpox infection. Vaccines are now commercially available especially in areas where the disease is endemic.
